Botox® is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes. It may also be used on wrinkles on the lower part of the face and neck, often in combination with dermal fillers.
Botox® contains botulinum toxin, which is a purified protein that blocks the nerve signal from your brain to your muscles, causing them to temporarily relax. The result is overlying skin becomes smoother and unwrinkled.
The area to be treated is cleansed and then Botox® solution is injected into the wrinkle-causing muscles. The treatment takes approximately 10 minutes. As with all injections there may be some mild temporary discomfort.
Try to exercise your treated muscles for the 1st hour after your Botox treatment (e.g facial gestures like frowning, raising your eyebrows and squinting). Do not have a facial, rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours after your treatment. Do not lie down or do strenuous exercise for 3 hours after treatment. Also, avoid any exposure to a sauna, hot tub or tanning for 4 hours. Please be aware that some patients experience a mild headache after the Botox treatment. If this happens, it maybe advisable to take a headache pill, such as Paracetemol.
Results are usually visible between 2-12 days. The area treated should appear smoother with fewer wrinkles. The effects of Botox® injections generally last for about three to four months, although the results can last longer with repeated treatments. It is very hard to predict exactly how Botox® injections will affect your muscles. You may therefore, find that the results are not what you intended.
The most common side effects are redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising which will all resolve. Other complications are rare but could include temporary drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows, which resolves itself when the effects of botulinum toxin wear off. The risk of side effects following treatment is reduced by consultation with an experienced practitioner.
